A visit to the hospital is disconcerting for everyone, but for the non-English speaker it can be frightening. For the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, MERJE developed an “Interior Signage Standards Manual for the NYCHHC Limited English Proficiency Program.”
This multi-lingual signage program is made up of wayfinding, identification, and code signs, as well as multilingual printed pieces that aid visitors in navigation. The program has been developed to accommodate information for up to 9 languages, including Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, or Urdu, depending on the neighborhood of the hospital. To identify areas, signage, and individuals where this information is available, a color-blended, encircled lower-case “i” multi-lingual symbol was developed.
