Downtown wayfinding master plan
San Diego, CAlifornia

San Diego is one of the most desirable cities in the nation, offering a breathtaking waterfront location, warm year-round temperatures and an exciting 24-hour live - work - play environment.

With direct access from Interstate 5, only a 5 minute drive from the San Diego Airport and a popular port of call for crusie ships, San Diego's Downtown offers a friendly walkable enviroment from Horton Plaza to the Gaslamp Quarter to Little Italy, Downtown is always vibrant and active.

In 2009 the Centre City Development Corporation hired the design team of MERJE and Rick Engineeriing to develop a Downtown Wayfinding Master Plan. Chosen from a field of nationally recognized design firms, the MERJE/Rick team has been charged with approaching the wayfinding program on two levels.

The first is the analysis of the existing vehicular wayfinding system, installed in 1999. The second level of the project includes providing parking and pedestrian enhancements to aid a visitor's wayfinding journey. Technology, pedestrian connections, district identities and ease of parking are the primary focus areas of the study. The project also includes strategies for implementation, long-term maintenance, CALTRANS coordination, and overall administration of the project.
